Creating a one-person play -

with Benjamin Salmon

Workshop details:

Through a series of games, readings, creative discussions and writing exercises that explore character and structure, you will be given the tools to help discover your very own brand of creative magic in the pursuit of writing your first (or next!) one person play.

You'll discover the humour, the vulnerability and the power that come from writing in the form of a confessional monologue, and the wide breadth of story that is possible through writing from the singular perspective of one main protagonist.

No writing experience is necessary - just a willingness and desire to write a character and tell a story that only you can tell. It is okay if that story / character is only a seedling of an idea at this stage - we will do specific work during the session to help you uncover the intricacies and creative detail of where your writing and storytelling can possibly take you.

About Benjamin:

Benjamin Salmon is an award-winning playwright and actor. After training as an actor at National Youth Theatre, he was accepted onto Soho Theatre's Writers Lab program in 2017, where he developed his one-person play "Blowhole", which premiered at Pleasance, London earlier this year. Other writing credits include "Our House" - a site-specific immersive play and love letter to queer history of medieval England that was commissioned by National Youth Theatre and premiered on the grounds of Eltham Palace, as part of English Heritage's Shout Out Loud initiative. The production received a UK Heritage Award for Best Live Event in 2020.

As an actor and performer, Benjamin has performed at venues such as Soho Theatre, Shaftesbury Theatre, Tristan Bates Theatre, Pleasance Theatre and Park Theatre. As a writer, he has been shortlisted for BBC Writersroom and Pentabus Theatre's Writer in Residence scheme. At the end of 2020, TV production companies SISTER and Olivia Colman's South of the River Pictures included Benjamin on their SCREENSHOT list of emerging comedy writer-performers who they believe have the potential to offer fresh and exciting new projects to the UK television landscape.

As a practitioner and facilitator in performance and writing, Benjamin is an Associate Artist at National Youth Theatre, and is also an Associate within the creative learning and community departments of such organisations as Soho Theatre, Old Vic Theatre and National Theatre.
